Sean McVay takes blame for Rams’ flat performance: ‘I’ve got to be way better’

After ripping off three wins in impressive fashion against the Bears, Colts and Buccaneers, the Rams had a lot to celebrate and feel good about. But they were sent crashing back down to earth on Sunday afternoon after being blown out by 17 points against the Cardinals.

And so Sean McVay’s postgame press conference had a very different feel than the last three. Rather than discussing all the things the Rams did well, McVay shouldered the blame for the team’s flat performance and unimpressive display against the Cardinals.

“I’ve got to be way better for our football team. Make no excuses about it. Didn’t do a good enough job getting our guys ready to go, but fortunately for us, we’ve got a chance to be able to respond the way we expect to, the way we want to, and that’s exactly what we’ll do moving forward,” McVay said.

“There were a lot of decisions, a lot of things that I didn’t do a nearly good enough job for our football team,” he continued. “There were a lot of decisions and things that I wish I would’ve done a better job for our football team with. We’ll look at ourselves critically, we’ll move forward.”

McVay often takes the blame for the Rams’ losses, but this was a game where he did make a few poor decisions, primarily on fourth down. He had the Rams punt on fourth-and-3 from the Cardinals’ 49-yard line and then tried a 46-yard field goal on fourth-and-4 while down by 14 points.

He’s not the reason the Rams lost because the execution was poor on both sides of the ball, but there were areas where he could’ve been better, as he alluded to.
