Sean McVay still very confident in Jared Goff despite late-season struggles

Although the Los Angeles Rams had an amazing season, it came to a very disappointing end. After making it all the way to the Super Bowl, the team put up just three points in the loss to the Patriots.

Jared Goff received a ton of criticism for his performance in the game, but Sean McVay is standing by him. Speaking to reporters at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine, McVay said the team was still very confident in Goff moving forward.

“We feel really good about Jared Goff’s development,” McVay said. He emphasized that Goff wasn’t going to let any outside noise rattle him or impact him moving forward, pointing out that Goff is someone who has already had to “overcome some adversity,” referring to Goff’s rocky rookie season.

Later in an interview with SiriusXM NFL radio, McVay again hammered home that Goff won’t be phased by any of the criticism that has come his way. “He is a mentally tough guy,” McVay declared.

In the same interview, McVay said he wouldn’t dwell on the Super Bowl.

“Jared also knows there’s no chance we’re in that game without him.” He again emphasized the “adversity” that Goff has consistently overcome throughout his career, and said that’s one of the most important things he looks for in a player.

He went further, saying “our players and our coaches have total trust and confidence and a belief in Jared that he’s going to continue to lead us in the right way.”

McVay didn’t mince words, and he made it clear he was speaking on behalf of the whole team with his impassioned defense of Goff. He backed Goff emphatically and didn’t leave any room for doubt about how the franchise feels about him. Any talk about the Rams not being sold on Goff longterm was clearly inaccurate, and they’re in it for the long haul.

McVay once again accepted most of the blame for the Super Bowl loss, and took complete ownership over what happened. A lot of Rams fans were panicking about Goff’s performance, but if McVay isn’t worrying then neither should they.
