Sean McVay: Rams have ‘positive problems’ with great depth at CB, safety

Several positions have already been settled for the Los Angeles Rams as they head into final roster cuts. They more or less know who’s going to make the team at quarterback, running back, tight end and inside linebacker, as well as up front on the defensive line.

Where the tougher decisions come is at wide receiver and in the secondary, specifically at cornerback.

With players such as Kevin Peterson, Darious Williams, Dont’e Deayon, Steven Parker and Ramon Richards all on the bubble, the Rams will have to part ways with some talented players – just as every other team will.

Sean McVay knows how many tough calls there will be and discussed those decisions after Thursday night’s preseason win.

“In a lot of instances, our top four corners really haven’t played. We’ve got some depth at the safety position. We’ve talked really highly of what Taylor Rapp and Marqui Christian have done throughout the course of the preseason, so we felt like we’ve seen a good bit of those guys. But those are going to be really tough decisions,” he said. “I know that we’ve got a lot of really capable football players, and there’s gonna be some guys that unfortunately we’ll have to let go that I think are NFL-caliber players and that’s a credit to them, it’s a credit to Coach (Ejiro) Evero, Coach (Aubrey) Pleasant and the development that they’ve had with that room. Those are positive problems but those make our decisions tough and that’s what you want at this time of year even though it’s not the most fun thing to do.”

It’s difficult to say which direction the Rams will go in the secondary, but there are only so many roster spots to go around. Nick Scott is essentially a roster lock because of his special teams value, which will likely push Steven Parker off the team.

Peterson hasn’t yet locked up a position on the 53-man roster, but he appears to have the edge over Dominique Hatfield, Deayon, Williams and Richards. The Rams will likely add one or two DBs to the practice squad if given the opportunity on Sunday.
