Sean McVay is not one to make excuses, and he’s certainly not going to do that this week after the Rams’ loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Even as controversial as the late pass interference penalty on Darious Williams was, McVay refuses to use that as an excuse for his team’s loss.
He was asked about the penalty on Monday after having a day to reflect on it and possibly ask the league about the call, but his response is exactly what you’d expect from him. He didn’t rip the official who made the call, nor did he use that as the reason for the Rams’ loss.
“That’s not something that I’m going to dwell on because the reality is, is that it never comes down to one play,” he said. “You’re not going to get me to make an excuse about that. In a lot of instances, I think those refs have to make decisions that they feel like they see in live action and it’s not my position to question those things. I think we want to continue to educate our players on how to compete with a mindset that they aren’t able to be restricted, in terms of what they’re doing. So, that’s where we look for the clarity, but there was a lot of things that occurred in that game and it’ll never come down to one play. I think that’s the message and that’s what I genuinely believe.”
Asked plainly if he thought it was pass interference, McVay once again declined to share his opinion. He clearly doesn’t want to dwell on the controversial call, even if the Rams would have won the game had the flag not been thrown.
“I think that’s not for me to make those decisions,” he said. “It’s not my place. Clearly that was a play that didn’t go in our favor, but I’m not going to comment on how I saw that.”
The loss stings, but the Rams have a favorable matchup in Week 4 with the New York Giants coming to town. McVay wants to look forward and not in the rearview, which is hard to blame him for.
Dwelling on a questionable penalty will do nothing to change the result of the game, even as bad as the loss stings.
