Sean McVay: ‘It’s insane to think’ Rams would move on from Jared Goff

The Los Angeles Rams have yet to sign Jared Goff to a contract extension, which has inexplicably created some doubt that they ever will. That, paired with his struggles late last season and in the Super Bowl, have caused some to believe the Rams aren’t committed to Goff as their franchise quarterback.

Only, the team has said and done nothing to make that seem true. Sean McVay has offered effusive praise of Goff and makes it clear he hopes they’re together for a long, long time. He took quite possibly his strongest stance recently in an interview with Fred Roggin of NBC Los Angeles.

McVay was quick to call the idea of the Rams moving on from Goff ludicrous. Roggin said some people think the Rams might move on from Goff just so McVay can bring in his own guy, which Roggin said he thought “was insane.” McVay agreed.

“I agree, it’s insane,” McVay deadpanned. “I can assure you that is not going to happen. He ain’t going anywhere and he’s just continuing to get better.”

McVay went on to compliment Goff’s poise and mental makeup.

“I think what’s really special about him is the way that he’s wired mentally,” McVay said. “He’s got elite mental toughness and extreme security in himself that doesn’t ride the wave of the inevitable ups and downs that you face as a quarterback, and I think he’s so authentic and genuine, his players love him.”

McVay didn’t back down from making it abundantly clear that the Rams are fully committed to Goff as their starting quarterback. He loves what he’s seen from the young passer and is encouraged by the way Goff continues to improve.

There’s no doubt in McVay’s mind that Goff will be his quarterback for the foreseeable future – as long as he has anything to do with it.

“He’s just getting better and better,” McVay said. “This offseason, he’s continued to take steps, truly becoming an extension of the coaching staff and a huge part of our success as a team the last couple of years is due to his leadership and we’re so thankful to have him. I agree, Fred. It’s insane to think that he’s going anywhere. He’s stuck with me as long as I have a say.”

McVay doesn’t have control of the roster, but you can bet if he continues to stand by Goff as strongly as he has, the Rams will keep the two together.
