Sean McVay doesn’t understand how NFL will play and social distance

Sean McVay is asking the question so many others are also pondering: How will the NFL play this fall while still practicing social distancing? He doesn’t know how that will be possible, considering football is a contact sport and players are colliding with each other on every play.

McVay said on a conference call Thursday that he doesn’t understand how exactly it’ll work, given the restrictions currently put in place due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It’s a valid question, and it’s a big reason for Dr. Anthony Fauci’s skepticism about the NFL being able to play this year. The NBA is taking a bubble approach to their season, keeping everyone in one central location in Orlando – specifically Disney World.

That’s much more difficult for the NFL to do, with such large rosters and coaching staffs, and the need for fields to practice on throughout the week. All of these factors are being taken into consideration by the league, though it still plans to play the season as scheduled.

Rams GM Les Snead tried to provide McVay with an answer regarding how football will be played while social distancing, pointing to Big 12 football as an example of spacing on the field.

The Rams are set to open the preseason on Aug. 14 against the New Orleans Saints, with the regular season beginning a month later at SoFi Stadium against the Cowboys.
