Darrell Henderson Jr.’s fantasy stock was on a rapid rise this summer after Cam Akers tore his Achilles, being elevated to a starting role with the Los Angeles Rams. But that same stock took a hit on Wednesday when the Rams acquired Sony Michel from the Patriots for two draft picks.
With a projected timeshare in the backfield, it’s unclear which player will get the most touches, but Sean McVay reiterated that Henderson’s role isn’t going to change much due to the arrival of Michel. He’s still going to play a big part on offense.
“Darrell is still going to have a really big role. Doesn’t really change the outlook for him. And then we’ll see how quickly we can get Sony up to speed,” McVay said.
That’s good news for Henderson owners in fantasy because he does have great potential in Los Angeles’ scheme. In the 11 games he started, he rushed for 534 yards on 120 carries, scoring four touchdowns and adding 114 yards receiving.
He was productive even when sharing the backfield with Akers, but he must stay healthy. And considering he banged up his hand and sprained his thumb, the Rams couldn’t risk losing Henderson without having a quality backup behind him.
“We feel good about the running back situation, but some of the volatility of what Darrell’s gone through, even just throughout the course of camp, wanted to make sure you got somebody else that’s played in big-time games that brings a physical presence to that room,” McVay added.
Henderson and Michel will both be big parts of the offense, it’s just a matter of finding roles for each player.
