Sean McVay broke down plays on TV during a Rams game, and it was delightful

It’s fun to get inside Sean McVay’s head.

The Los Angeles Rams coach is one of the most promising young minds in the NFL, and is fresh off a trip to the Super Bowl, where he was bested by Bill Belichick, one of the most brilliant coaches in the history of the game. Even in defeat, McVay’s ability to design and call plays is the envy of the NFL. McVay gave a small glimpse as to why during the Rams’ second preseason game on Saturday.

McVay hopped onto a headset with the NFL Network broadcast during the Rams’ 14-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. McVay walked the viewers through a few downs in his his defense.

The broadcast convinced McVay to stick around for offense, too. He broke down the first play of the following offensive drive.

McVay didn’t reveal anything groundbreaking about his scheme. (Why would he?) But he showed his ability to quickly relay and diagnose what’s happening on the football field at an X’s and O’s level. That’s a large part of what makes him so good at adjusting throughout a football game — and throughout a season.

Football fans and media members loved the performance.
