Sean McDermott’s Job Not in Jeopardy, Bills Insider Says

The Bills are one of the more disappointing NFL teams this year at just 6–6, and that has some fans asking where coach Sean McDermott stands. The veteran coach, who has led the team since 2017, has been under fire for some of the team’s close losses this year.

However, McDermott’s job doesn’t appear to be in danger. The Athletic’s Tim Graham reports that multiple sources told him there is “zero” chance Bills owner Terry Pegula will fire McDermott at any point this year.

Graham added that Pegula does not want to get in between McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane, who have been together since 2017. Both McDermott and Beane signed extensions with Buffalo last June, tying them to the Bills organization through the 2027 season.

In his seven-year stint as the Bills' head coach, McDermott has a 68–41 record with just one losing season and has made the playoffs five times since ending Buffalo’s almost 20-year postseason drought in 2017. Buffalo has also won the AFC East in each of the previous three seasons.

However, the Bills haven’t been able to get over the hump in the playoffs. McDermott is just 4–5 in playoff games, which includes one AFC Championship Game appearance and back-to-back losses in the divisional round.

Even if the Bills can’t reach the playoffs this year, it appears the team would prefer to run it back with McDermott in 2024.
