Sean McComb laughs off Ohara Davies 'quit' jibe after title defeat

Sean McComb retained his trademark humour as he batted off some online criticism from Ohara Davies following his Commonwealth title defeat.

McComb was stopped by Gavin Gwynne in Bolton last night, suffering his first loss as a professional.

The Belfast boxer turned his back on the action following a flurry of punches from Gwynne in the seventh round, prompting referee Steve Gray to step in and halt the contest.

It was a frantic, brutal fight from start to finish, with McComb looking visibly exhausted at the end.

McComb said he was "gutted" by his performance, but after recently becoming a father he says he took the sensible route out.

"Firstly gutted at my performance!" the 28-year-old said on Twitter.

"Secondly I was enjoying a good tear up at that time! It's f****** lethal!

"Finally I caught myself on realised I've a child in the house while I was getting battered. It's not about me anymore. #Family

"I'll definitely be a good journeyman."

McComb's brave effort earned plenty of praise, but not from super-lightweight boxer Davies.

Davies was lampooned when he quit against Josh Taylor back in 2017.

Davies said after that fight: "There's fighters faster than me stronger than me. But no fighter is smarter than me, no fighter got the heart and determination that I got."

At the time, McComb replied: "A big heart doesn't quit!"

Davies - who has since gone on to win the lucrative Golden Contract tournament - was quick to remind McComb of his comments following last night's defeat.

He tweeted: "I just found this of what Sean Mccomb sent to me a couple of years ago, how he has eaten his words the t*****."

In typical McComb fashion, The Public Nuisance laughed it off by saying: I'll come back to super lightweight and we should fight and see who quits first - be entertaining the bets would be class!"
