Sean Maguire is in the mix for Denmark after New Zealand goal says Mick McCarthy

Sean Maguire's performance against New Zealand has put him in the mix to start Ireland's vital Euro 2020 qualifier against Denmark.

Maguire, 25, netted in a green jersey for the first time in the 3-1 victory over the All Whites.

And it could be a straight shoot-out between the Kilkenny man and his Preston team-mate Callum Robinson, who also broke his international duck on Thursday night, for a slot on the right side of Mick McCarthy's attack against the Danes on Monday.

Robbie Brady's hopes of starting there were most likely dashed by virtue of playing the full 93 minutes in the friendly.

Despite a good display, Brady is still working his way back to full fitness and his best form.

Asked about his selection decisions for two days time, McCarthy replied: “It doesn’t take too much guesswork that, does it?

"They’re the tried and tested so, for all these who have done well against New Zealand, they (the experienced players who didn't feature) are the ones that have lost one out of seven, most of them.”

However right-sided role has been an issue for McCarthy, who has not settled on anyone there.

But with James McClean expected to play on the left, Maguire has put himself in the frame.

"He's trained well this week, in that position, and took everything we said in training into the game," acknowledged the Ireland supremo. "I was pleased with him."

Pleased enough not to worry about throwing him into a game of this importance?

"He's not had that much game time but I thought he was really good, so yes, I wouldn't have any fears with him at all," McCarthy admitted.

Maguire capped a strong display with a superb finish from just outside the  box.

"He had a similar chance in training the other day and funnily enough he stuck it away, it was on his left foot, not on his right," said McCarthy.

"I was pleased he got his goal in the end. He didn't let his head drop, he kept playing, he did really well

"They're all options. I feel that his best slot - and he plays there for his club - is on that left hand side. He likes to come in on the right foot.

"He's done himself no harm. Me being a defender, I'd want to have a clean sheet. I wasn't a striker, but they want to contribute by scoring goals, and it was a great finish.

"Callum as well, that's one of the things we talked about in the meeting before the game, about getting inside that far post and getting on the end of something. So something sank in!"
