Sean Longstaff watches Brighton match with Newcastle United fans while on holiday in Canada

He may have had his season cut short by injury, but Sean Longstaff was still cheering his team on from more than 3,000 miles away.

The NUFC midfielder joined the Toon Army Toronto to watch the clash against Brighton on Saturday.

The supporters club spotted on Instagram that Longstaff was holidaying nearby, and invited him to join them for the match at their local.

"I wasn't expecting him to reply," said club member Colin Appleby.

"But he got back and said he was really excited about the prospect."

Washington-born Colin, 33, who has lived in Toronto for five years, was sadly unable to meet Longstaff himself after having to return to the North East at short notice for a family emergency.

But he said: "Everyone said it was amazing, he chatted with everybody and took time to have pictures with the group.

"They said he was just a really down to earth guy.

"I messaged him again to say thank you and he said he'd definitely come back to Canada.

"It was great for some of the guys because some of us in the club are from the North East so we've been to games and maybe bumped into players before, whereas a lot of the lads are local Canadians and haven't had the chance to go to a Newcastle game.

"It really meant the world to a lot of the boys."
