Sean Longstaff told to snub Manchester United transfer and stay at Newcastle

Sean Longstaff has been told to reject any transfer to Manchester United and remain at Newcastle next season by ex-Republic of Ireland midfielder Kevin Kilbane.

United have been linked with the 21-year-old midfielder after a series of impressive Premier League performances in the centre of the park this season.

Injury cut his campaign short, but he still showed United enough to put him on their radar, if reports are to be believed.

But the reports have also come with warnings from some ex-players, who think the move would be too much too soon for the Englishman.

Last week, former Man City and England defender Danny Mills said: “Man United already have McTominay, a similar type of player and age (22) to Longstaff. If you are a young player like Longstaff, you need to be sure you are joining a club where you can develop.

“Does Solskjaer have a record of developing players? No. Does Rafa Benitez, assuming he stays at Newcastle? Yes.

“Longstaff should think very carefully before leaving Newcastle, where he is likely to play regularly when he is fit again. He’ll regret it if he moves to Manchester United, where he might not play as much."

And now, Kilbane has echoed those sentiments, telling Off the Ball: "A good player [but] it's still too early in my mind.

"He's not played enough football, certainly at the top level. The games that I have seen him play, very good footballer and a technically good footballer.

"[But] it's too early for that one. Bad idea for now."
