Sean Longstaff to Man Utd: Steve Bruce responds to transfer talk as United reignite interest in midfielder

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce says the club remain determined to hold onto Manchester United target Sean Longstaff.

The Magpies placed a £50m price tag on the 22-year-old in the summer – a price that forced to United to shelve their plans to sign the midfielder.

Interest has returned however with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer desperate to add reinforcements this month after seeing Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay ruled out by injury.

But Bruce remains determined to keep hold of one of the club's prized assets.

Bruce told The Chronicle: "Look, I have said it from day one, we can never stop the speculation.

"As far as I am concerned I know Mick Phelan and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer very well and at this moment I don't know anything about it.

"We don't want to sell our best young players. That's certainly the case with Longy.

"This time last year he was just breaking through and he got in because of injury.

"The kid has done very well and let's see if we can keep playing."

Emre Can is another player United have looked at as potential option in January, while Benfica’s Gedson Fernandes was linked over Christmas.
