Sean Longstaff responds to Manchester United transfer interest

Sean Longstaff admits he was 'flattered' with the interest shown by Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

Newcastle midfielder Longstaff was one of many central midfielders considered by the club earlier this year as they looked to strengthen their central options.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have been left in need of a new midfield signing following the departures of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera, while Paul Pogba's long-term future at the club still remains unclear.

It remains to be seen whether or not United will renew their interest in Longstaff next year following a mixed start to the new season, but the 21-year-old admits he is 'flattered' by the rumours which have linked him with a move to Old Trafford.

However, despite the continued speculation Longstaff refused to be drawn further on the reports and insisted that any deal was a matter for the clubs to discuss.

“You’re seeing stuff about yourself on the telly and the next day I’m in the gym and I can’t even step on to a box that’s the height of my shin, or get up the stairs without grabbing something," he told The Times.

“It’s not really something for me to comment on. It’s between the clubs.

“I was flattered to get my name mentioned in those conversations, but like my dad says, ‘sport’s got a funny way of dragging you back down to earth.’”
