Sean Longstaff confirms he will be back for pre-season training and eyes return in summer friendlies

Sean Longstaff has confirmed he will be ready for pre-season training after recovering from a knee injury.

The Geordie midfielder sustained knee damage in the 2-0 defeat at West Ham in March, but did not require surgery and has made a successful recovery so far.

Longstaff is now eyeing a return this summer as United head to China to play in the Premier League's Asian Trophy.

He said: "You want to get back on the pitch as much as possible.

"I got a little taste of it, playing for a couple of months, and then it got taken away so quickly, but now I want to try and get back fit as quickly as possible.

"It's going to be a tough summer - I'll probably be in most of the summer - but I'm looking forward to it.

"It's a new challenge, it's going to allow me to get bigger and stronger, and hopefully ready for next year.

"It'll give me a chance to get back in pre-season and hopefully try and work as hard as I can to be around the team again and see if I can get back playing some games."

Longstaff has been pictured with the Toronto branch of the Toon Army after spending time in Canada last week.

Speaking to NUFC.co.uk, he said: "It was great - you know how big the club is but it gives you a realisation of just how big it is - you can be 3,000 miles or whatever it is from home, and there's still a Newcastle supporters club!

"It was great to meet them and talk to them; you hear their enthusiasm for the club and how much they love it, even though they're living so far away from it, so for me to watch the game with them was great."
