Sean Longstaff backs Steve Bruce to remain in charge if Newcastle United takeover happens

Sean Longstaff believes it would be 'unfair' not to allow Steve Bruce the chance to continue as head coach should Newcastle United be taken over.

The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia alongside Amanda Staveley and the Reuben Brothers are awaiting permission from the Premier League to complete the buy-out of United - and already, Bruce's role at the club has been brought into question.

A return for Rafa Benitez has been mooted while former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has also been linked but Longstaff believes Bruce should be given time to prove himself.

Speaking on the Epic Podcast, Longstaff was asked by host Brian Adair whether it would be unfair to 'overlook' Bruce to stay on, he replied: "I think it is, to be honest.

"From the moment he came, in China, at the start of this season, he's been brilliant.

"There have been times where for me personally I've wanted to play, he's left me out and I've asked the question [why] and he's been brutally honest with me.

"That's what you need.

"I've got all the respect in the world for the manager - he's helped me massively in terms of mentality to be able to go out there every single week and not just do it one day in training or for one game, he's drilled that into me.

"If you look at the team this year, we've been pretty successful I think - a lot of people wrote us off at the start, and I think it would be unfair if you didn't give him the chance to carry on the work that he has started to put into place."
