Sean Lock's brave cancer battle as he tragically succumbs to disease he once beat

Sean Lock once beat the awful disease which has now claimed his life.

The comedian, 58, has died at home following a battle with cancer.

And while not much is yet known about his brave fight against the disease this time around, Sean has previously spoken about beating it when he was in his 20s.

Sean, best known for his work as a team captain on Jimmy Carr's comedy panel show 8 Out Of 10 Cats and its spin-off 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, once opened up about how he'd battled skin cancer after working on a building site when he left school in the 1980s.

He wasn't diagnosed with the condition until the 1990s, but blamed it on over-exposure to the sun, admitting he never wore sunscreen while working on the site.

He was 27 when he was diagnosed with malignant melanoma.

Speaking about it in 2010, he told the Daily Mail : "I liked the work and the wages - £340 a week, which, in 1981, was a lot of money.

"You could hardly ask a big Irish foreman, 'Please could you rub some Ambre Solaire on my back?' And we didn't wear hats, either. None of us took any notice of the fact that we were going red."

His diagnosis actually came about off the back of a one night stand.

He said: "She noticed something about me that I hadn't. She said there was something weird on my back.

"I asked her what it looked like and she said it was a patch of skin which was black, misshapen, with a crusty texture and about the size of a 10p piece.

"I had no idea how long it had been there."

Sean said that the girl - named Tina - saved his life, suggesting that if he hadn't been with her that night he could have died.

And the doctors who diagnosed him in 1990 said that the cancer could have become incurable in as little as four months had he not made an appointment when he did.

They said it would have been likely that the disease would have spread to his lympathic system had it not been found when it was.

He went onto make a full recovery and launched his comedy career three years later, becoming known for his dry wit and deadpan delivery of his material.

It was announced today that Sean had died.

A statement from his agent Off The Kerb Productions said: "It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Sean Lock.

"He died at home from cancer, surrounded by his family.

"Sean was one of Britain's finest comedians, his boundless creativity, lightning wit and the absurdist brilliance of his work, marked him out as a unique voice in British comedy.

"Sean was also a cherished husband and father to three children. Sean will be sorely missed by all that knew him.

"We kindly request that the privacy of his family and children is respected at this difficult time."
