Sean Gannon not concerned with counting league titles as he closes in on record

Sean Gannon is on track to become the League of Ireland’s most decorated player of all time.

But the Dundalk right-back - crowned ‘SSE Airtricity / SWAI Player of the Month for May’ - claims it is the last thing on his mind.

Owen Heary and Johnny Matthews top the charts with a stunning seven Premier Division titles apiece.

Gannon, 27, has six to his name - but he is dismissing one of them as he played just once for Shamrock Rovers in 2011 and didn’t get a medal.

In his eyes, his own haul started in earnest at St Pat’s in 2013 before moving to Dundalk where he won leagues in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018.

“Signing for Dundalk, if somebody had said to me what we’d go on to do, I wouldn't have believed them,” said the Dubliner.

“I'm very fortunate to be part of squads that have been successful.

“Even though we've been winning things, the main thing for me was to enjoy my football because there was a time when I wasn't enjoying it.

“I was  trying to play my way into the league, so I haven't given much thought to becoming the most decorated player but if it happens, I’ll be delighted.”

Gannon continued: “Some people say to me about having six titles, but I only played one league game for Rovers and didn't get a medal.

“It's probably a bit much to say that. Even to win five I'm very lucky and if it was ever in touching distance, to hold that record would be unbelievable.

“But it's not something I focus on. When you're trying to win a league, it's so hard because every game is a fight and there are teams nipping at your heels.”
