Sean FitzPatrick: Former Anglo Irish Bank chief dies aged 73

Former Anglo Irish Bank chief Sean FitzPatrick has died at the age of 73.

Mr FitzPatrick passed way yesterday after a short illness, a spokesperson for his family has confirmed.

The former banker, better known as "Seanie" to his friends, was best known for his role in the expansion and subsequent collapse of Anglo Irish Bank following the property crash.

A Wicklow native, FitzPatrick's father was a farmer and his mother a civil servant. His sister, Joyce O'Connor, is a former President of the National College of Ireland.

A chartered accountant by qualification, in 1986 FitzPatrick rose to become chief executive of Anglo, a position he would hold until 2005 when he became chairman.

FitzPatrick resigned from Anglo in December 2008 amid mounting revelations over hidden loans he had taken out of the bank himself, which eventually led to the bank's nationalisation and collapse.

FitzPatrick borrowed over €100 million off the books of the bank over ten years. He was declared bankrupt in 2010.
