Sean Dyche tipped for Celtic job as former England international makes 'massive' job point

Former England striker Darren Bent has suggested Sean Dyche should take over as Celtic boss in the wake of Neil Lennon’s departure.

The Burnley boss has not been named among the various runners and riders to replace the Northern Irishman after his resignation on Wednesday, with the likes of Scotland coach Steve Clarke, former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe and ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard listed among the early favourites.

Appearing on TalkSPORT however, Bent said Dyche had likely taken the Lancashire club as far as he could during a near-decade long reign at Turf Moor.

The 49-year-old - who is the Premier League’s longest serving manager - has maintained Burnley’s status in the English top flight for almost five seasons and took them into Europe in the 2018/19 campaign.

Reports in the Daily Mirror suggest Dyche is one of three men on a shortlist to replace Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace when the veteran Eagles’ boss leaves in the summer on the expiry of his contract.

But Bent believes Celtic are missing a trick if they do not approach the long-serving Clarets manager, telling TalkSPORT it would be the ideal step up after reaching his ceiling at Turf Moor.

"I think he’s taken Burnley as far as he can go with hardly any investment,” Bent told the radio station.

"Surely the Celtic job is one he will look at and it will excite him a little bit because if you look around the Premier League, if he left tomorrow, where is he going to go?

"There’s nowhere really for him to go, is there? Southampton I guess if [Ralph] Hasenhuttl goes but other than that.

"Celtic, a massive, massive football club, so why not?”
