Sean Dyche reveals Burnley injury boost as key man returns to contention for Leeds United

Burnely boss Sean Dyche has revealed that in-form Clarets star Maxwel Cornet is in contention to return to his side for their trip to Elland Road on Sunday.

Ivory Coat international Cornet has made a quick impact since signing on at Turf Moor in the summer, scoring five times in nine appearances but has not featured since he limped off with a thigh injury in the December 4 defeat to Newcastle United.

Dyche's side lost 3-1 at Manchester United on Thursday evening and the Clarets boss was back on press duties on Friday afternoon to give an update on team news for the clash against Leeds United.

"Maxwel has made really good progress so comes back into the thinking," he said, before admitting that Connor Roberts and Ashley Barnes will miss out.

"Connor Roberts is back on the grass but not there yet. Ashley Barnes has had a little setback," he added.

Dyche, like many of his Premier League counterparts, has also been dealing with Covid-19 issues in his squad.

Josh Brownhill, Nick Pope, Jay Rodriguez and Kevin Long all missed out at Old Trafford, but the latter is back in contention.

"Kevin Long is back in," Dyche said. "We are waiting on two others at the end of the protocols."

Burnley's defeat to Manchester United was their first match since December 12, when they held West Ham to goalless draw, as they saw three consecutive games postponed among the ongoing wave of positive tests following the emergence of the Omicron variant.

Dyche's side will begin the New Year 18th in the Premier League table, two points from safety and five adrift of Leeds in 16th - although they have played a game less than 17th-placed Watford and two less than Bielsa's side.
