Sean Dyche explains 'admin error' that almost kicked Burnley out of FA Cup

Sean Dyche praised Bournemouth staff for notifying them of an administration error in the build-up to kick-off which could have seen Burnley booted out of the FA Cup.

The two sides met in the fifth round of the competition at Turf Moor on Tuesday.

Dyche made several changes to his team, but had originally picked usual left-back Erik Pieters to start the fixture.

That was until Bournemouth's head of media and communications, Anthony Marshall, pointed out that Pieters was in fact ineligible due to suspension having been booked in both previous rounds.

Anthony Driscoll-Glennon was swiftly called into the starting XI at the expense of Pieters to avoid any repercussions, though as it happened Burnley were beaten on the night and eliminated anyhow.

Dyche said: "It wasn't disruptive. It was just a simple admin error. We have people who keep an eye on situations, unfortunately it got away from that moment where someone found clarity.

"The rules have changed this year with the booking situation and the number of games in the FA Cup. It was just a clear oversight.

"To be fair to Bournemouth, they flagged it and mentioned it, so credit to them for a bit of gentlemanly conduct. We jumped on it straight away and people at our club held their hands up in the right slots."

Championship side Bournemouth took the lead midway through the first half when Sam Surridge converted Jack Stacey's low cross with a close-range tap-in.

From there the Cherries had a grip on proceedings for much of the match, though Jay Rodriguez missed a glaring chance to equalise when he spurned a shot over the bar from six yards.

Junior Stanislas then sealed the victory with a late penalty for Bournemouth after Surridge had raced through before being fouled by Kevin Long.

The win sees Bournemouth reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for only the second time in their history.
