Sean Dyche jokes about Liverpool’s style of play and makes Champions League claim

Burnley manager Sean Dyche believes that Liverpool showed the right way to play football on their way to winning the Champions League trophy last season.

Dyche has been speaking about the Reds as he thinks that teams who play keep-ball in their own six-yard box will soon return to playing the long ball from goalkeepers.

And he has stated that Liverpool showed the way to play in last year's Champions League as they claimed the trophy on a memorable night in Madrid.

Dyche speaking at the Clarets press conference on Thursday, as reported by Mirror Football, explained: “You wouldn't coach an under-12 team to play like that – and the time will come when people start playing it longer again.

“Glenn Hoddle was the best passer of a football I've ever seen.

"In the modern game, why on earth would you go up to him and say, 'Sorry, I only want you to pass it 10 yards' when he's got two cannons in his feet? I always get caned for saying that but I don't know why.

“You soon swallow your pride about playing out from your own six-yard box if you stop losing and start winning.

The Burnley boss then jokingly made an example of Liverpool in a light-hearted manner as the press call concluded.

He added: “Check out Liverpool's passing stats in the Champions League final – 67 per cent pass completion, only 280 passes in 90 minutes.

"Anti-football won the European Cup final. There you go!"

Dyche also made his feeling known about VAR amid controversy in the Premier League with Liverpool angry that Manchester United's goal wasn't disallowed for a foul on Sunday.

Burnley were on the end of an VAR decision after Chris Wood's late equaliser at Leicester was ruled out.

"I was happy with my words afterwards but it was such a soft one and we saw over the weekend other soft ones that weren't given.

"We're just looking for that balance. I'm still a believer in VAR, I think it's a good thing and I think eventually it will be more streamlined because of the advances in technology and the human side of it.

"We soon forget the debate on goal-line technology but within months it's instant and hardly impacts on anything.

"The only question mark left for it in my opinion is the turnover of penalties. I think we all agree there's been a few that should have been turned over. They should be turned over if they genuinely think they're wrong."
