New Bears defensive coordinator Sean Desai has brought a new energy to Chicago’s defense, which has been evident through the first couple of weeks of training camp.
Bears players and head coach Matt Nagy have spoken glowingly of Desai stepping in as defensive coordinator following Chuck Pagano’s retirement. Given Desai’s been around since 2013, he already has those relationships with his defensive players, who are certainly buying into Desai’s plan to return Chicago’s defense to the dominant force it was in 2018.
That starts with getting more takeaways than the last couple of years, which is where Desai’s “takeaway bucket” comes into play. It stresses the importance of getting a takeaway and inspires his players to get after the ball so they can dunk it into the blue tub.
Desai was Mic’d up during one of the Bears’ unpadded practices, which gave us a look at Desai’s teaching methods, his relationship with the players and his desire for his unit to take advantage of every takeaway opportunity presented them.
Oh, and of course, there was a takeaway bucket sighting.
