Sean Cox will attend Liverpool Legends v Republic of Ireland Legends fundraiser in Aviva Stadium

Sean Cox will leave hospital for the first time in a year to attend a special charity match in Dublin's Aviva Stadium on Friday night.

A close friend of the Dunboyne man revealed that he "can't wait" to watch the game, which will serve as a fundraiser to support his ongoing recovery.

Sean was seriously injured last April after he was attacked by AS Roma supporters before Liverpool's Champions League semi-final tie outside Anfield.

The dad of three suffered serious head injuries in the attack.

Earlier this year the FAI confirmed that an Irish Legends XI will take on a Liverpool Legends XI in a charity match to raise funds for the Sean Cox Rehabilitation Trust at the national stadium.

An all-star cast of former Liverpool and Ireland players will line out in the match, which will take place this Friday.

Reds icon Kenny Dalglish will manage the Liverpool side which will be captained by Ian Rush, while current Republic of Ireland manager will lead the Irish side captained by Robbie Keane.

Niall Quinn, John Aldridge, Robbie Fowler and many more legends of the sport will also be taking part in the event.

And now it has been revealed that Sean himself is expected to attend the game.

Close friend Stephen Felle told Newstalk Breakfast: “We’re delighted to say that Seán is going to be there in person.

“It’s going to be Sean Cox’s first move outside a medical environment in almost 12 months, so it’s very special for the family, and it’s very emotional for [his wife] Martina.”

“She said he does [know he’s going]... she said he does, and he’s excited… he keeps smiling, and he can’t wait.”

However Stephen urged caution, as the visit could be called off if Sean's condition suddenly worsens.

He added: “It has taken a lot of planning. He is obviously medically dependent, and in terms of the logistics of getting him to there and making sure he’s properly cared for when in the stadium have taken some work.

“The caveat is if Sean got an infection or a cold or something happens between now and Friday, we might have to change the plan.

"But as we sit here now… that’s the plan.”
