Sean Cox sends message to Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp after Champions League final victory

Sean Cox has passed on his congratulations to Liverpool after returning home to watch Jurgen Klopp's side lift the Champions League.

Dad-of-three Sean suffered life-changing injuries in an unprovoked attack outside Anfield ahead of the Champions League semi-final against Roma in April 2018.

His assailant, Roma fan Simone Mastrelli, was jailed for three-and-a-half years in February while another Roma supporter was sentenced to three years for violent disorder.

Sean was left in a coma for six weeks at Walton Neurological Centre before he was transported to Ireland where he has been continuing his recovery at Dublin's National Rehabilitation Hospital.

But on Saturday he was discharged from hospital for the evening and returned to his home in Co Meath to watch on television as Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in Madrid to win their sixth European Cup.

“On Sean’s behalf, I want to offer our heartfelt congratulations to Liverpool Football Club on winning the Champions League,” Sean's wife Martina Cox said on Sunday, as reported by RTE.

“The club and its fans have taken Sean, our family and I into their hearts since Sean’s attack last year.

“Nobody could be happier than the Cox family for Jurgen Klopp , his players and the wonderful Liverpool fans.

“Sean watched the game with us at home, proudly wearing a signed Liverpool jersey sent to him by the club's CEO Peter Moore last week.

“He was overjoyed when the final whistle blew and Liverpool were crowned champions.”
