Sean Cox congratulates Liverpool on Champions League win after emotional day at home

An overjoyed Seán Cox has congratulated Liverpool on their Champions League win after an emotional day at his home before returning to hospital.

The father-of-three joined his friends and family at his Dunboyne home in an emotional rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ after the Reds 2-0 victory over Tottenham Spurs and returned to hospital “elated.”

Speaking on her husband’s behalf, Martina Cox said: “I want to offer our heartfelt congratulations to Liverpool Football Club on winning the Champions League.

“The club and its fans have taken Seán, our family and I, into their hearts since Seán’s attack last year.

“Nobody could be happier than the Cox family for Jurgen Klopp, his players and the wonderful Liverpool fans.

“Seán watched the game with us at home, proudly wearing a signed Liverpool jersey sent to him by the club’s CEO Peter Moore last week.

“He was overjoyed when the final whistle blew and Liverpool were crowned champions.”

Following the triumphant win on Saturday night Liverpool CEO, Peter Moore, tweeted a heartwarming picture of Sean with his son Jack which has gone viral.

He captioned the photo: “Been some great photos tonight, this is the best #SeanCox.”

The photo saw thousands of well wishes pouring in for Mr Cox with many dedicating the win to his bravery and his family.

The Support Sean group had posted the photo originally with the caption “YNWA, Coxy.”

The group has been set up to promote the fundraising and awareness for Sean’s recovery process.

Sean, 54, from Dunboyne, Co Meath suffered brutal brain injuries after he was attacked by Roma fans ahead of a Champion’s League semi-final at Anfield in April, 2018.

Over 27,000 people attended a fundraising game between Liverpool and Ireland legends in April which saw Sean Cox making his first public appearance since the horrific attack.

Fundraising is continuing to aid Sean’s recovery process as he will leave the National Rehabilitation Hospital at Dun Laoghaire at the end of this month.

Mrs Cox has said she is looking at moving to the UK to get the best care possible for her husband.

She said: “It’s a very slow progress but he is making progress and obviously the most progress he has actually made has been since he went to the rehabilitation centre in October.

“That’s really important that he gets the level of rehab and he’s going to need that for a long time going forward.

“The end of June he’s finished. What we are looking at now is rehab facilities in the UK because unfortunately in Ireland there isn’t anything else after the NRH which is shameful.

“Sean could do with being there (NRH) for another year but unfortunately you only get a certain amount of time so after the NRH we have to fund his rehabilitation in the UK.

“I am currently looking into that so when we find the best fit for Sean I’m going to move over there.”
