Sean Connery birthday: Celebrations as former Bond star turns 90

Fans have been paying tribute to Sir Sean Connery as the former Bond star celebrates his 90th birthday.

Celebrities posted messages for the Hollywood great over social media on the actor’s milestone birthday.

Director and film critic Mark Cousins wrote: “On his 90th birthday, I’d like to mention how Sean Connery encouraged me at Edinburgh Film Festival and afterwards.

"I was shy, working class lad but passionate about movies. He made phone calls and said “how can I help?” Behind the scenes I saw lots of acts of generosity."

Writer Irvine Welsh said: “Happy birthday Sean! He once phone me from LA at my ex mother-in-laws in South London. I was out and she took the call.

"When I came back she said: 'I think one of your daft mates called pretending to be Sean Connery, duck. He did sound Scotch though.'"

One of Scotland’s greatest living stars has had an incredible career in film - bagging an Oscar, two BAFTAs and three Golden Globes among a whole host of other awards over the years.

The 90-year-old is best remembered for his role as James Bond in a series of films from 1962 to 1971.

In that time, he starred as 007 in Dr No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever.

The Edinburgh -born actor continued his career over the three decades that followed, winning awards for his roles in the likes of The Untouchables and The Name of the Rose.

A Radio Times poll of 14,000 people found the actor to be the greatest to ever play the famous spy - ahead of the likes of Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan and George Lazenby.

His final on-screen role came in 2003 when he starred in the blockbuster film The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Despite the film being considered as one of that year’s biggest flops, Sean Connery has had a lasting impact on the film industry.
