Seamus Power surges into lead at Rocket Mortgage Classic

Seamus Power is tied for the lead at the PGA Tour's Rocket Mortgage Classic after following up a 67 on Thursday with a six-under par 66 today.

Power, 33, looks set to contend among a host of big names at Detroit Golf Club.

It is the Waterford man's eighth start on the PGA Tour this season, with his best finish, a tie for 31st place, coming at the Bermuda championship back in November.

Power made three birdies on the front nine and three more birdies followed on the back nine as he shot a flawless 66 without dropping a shot.

Matthew Wolff is currently tied with Power at the top of the leaderboard, while a number of players, including Kevin Kisner and Bryson DeChambeau, trail by a shot in second place.

Power has yet to win on the PGA Tour and his maiden Web.com Tour victory came in May 2016, before he represented Ireland at the Rio Olympics later that year.

He is the only Irish player competing in Detroit this weekend, with World No 1 Rory McIlroy taking some time off to iron out 'stupid mistakes'.
