Seamus Coleman names two surprise Everton leaders and speaks out over criticism

Seamus Coleman has picked out two surprise Everton players he believes have real leadership qualities in the side.

The Blues captain also addressed his own form and the need for him to potentially change his style of play in the future.

The Republic of Ireland international was dropped to the bench for the 1-1 draw away to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last time out.

Alongside him on the bench was Allan, and the Brazilian is someone Coleman believes holds all the leadership qualities necessary - with Dominic Calvert-Lewin also developing similar traits.

The defender told evertonfc.com : "Allan is a great leader, someone who helps me along as much as he can.

"His English is improving every week and he has excellent leadership qualities.

"And Dominic Calvert-Lewin is so important for us and starting to show real leadership qualities."

Coleman has been a regular in the side throughout the majority of the campaign, with Rafa Benitez's squad fluctuating in form.

The right-back's performances have been questioned with many believing a transfer in that position should be a priority for the Blues in January.

However, the captain is happy to take the responsibility of scrutiny.

“There were a few occasions in the past when my form was under scrutiny,” added Coleman.

“I am captain of the club and a familiar face.

“I would rather it be me than someone coming through, or a player who has just signed for the club. I can take it on the chin and understand you have to accept the good and bad together.

“You can’t just read about the good times. You have to take the stick when it comes. When you go to the training ground, you do your work and put in your effort.

“The noise outside of that, in the best possible way, doesn’t affect me. I know what I am doing to try to have a positive impact on the team every day.

“I might not be the playing presence I was at 23 or 24, but as a captain and in training every day, I am giving my all, approaching it as if I was a 22-year-old.”

Coleman does not yet feel the need to change how he approaches the game, although he admits that time will come in the future.

He added: “I go full-tilt every day and wouldn’t like it any other way, no days off, always training like everyone else.

“I’ve always felt I need to train how I play; not be seen having days off or extra days in the gym.

“I am sure that time will come – but not yet.

“I’ve been left out of Everton teams or not picked for periods of time because of form but I’d never want teammates saying, ‘Look at him sulking because he’s not getting a game’.

“I couldn’t look my teammates in the eye if I went to training and didn’t give it everything, I don’t understand how you could give less than one hundred per cent.

“You have to respect the football club that pays you the good money we receive.”
