Seamus Coleman injury update as Everton captain set for Republic of Ireland withdrawal

The Republic of Ireland have confirmed Seamus Coleman's hamstring injury is set to see him withdraw from their squad ahead of a crucial play-off game.

Coleman was forced off after just less than an hour of yesterday's win over Brighton but Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti described the injury as "small".

The Blues captain is set to undergo scans to reveal the extent of the injury but Ireland boss Kenny is expecting the 31-year-old to miss their Euro 2020 play-off with Slovakia on Thursday.

“It’s disappointing in relation to our captain,” Kenny is quoted by the Irish Times.

“He has been in very good form and was having an exceptional game yesterday, I was watching and knew at the time. He seems to have a hamstring strain that will almost likely rule him out. We’ll see but the scan has revealed that he will probably have to withdraw.”

Following Everton's 4-2 win over Brighton, Ancelotti spoke hopefully of the two week break until the Blues' next game - the derby on October 17 - as ample time for Coleman to recover.
