Seamus Coleman is relieved to see his old club Sligo Rovers wriggle free of ‘a slippery slope’.
The Republic of Ireland captain and Everton ace made his name in the game with the Bit O’Red between 2006 and 2009 before joining the Toffees for £60,000.
Liam Buckley’s charges remain seventh in the Premier Division but have closed to within six points of fourth-placed Derry after a run of six games unbeaten.
Coleman is in Portugal with the Republic of Ireland squad as they ramp up their preparations for the Denmark clash in Copenhagen in two weeks.
And speaking from Quinta do Lago yesterday, Coleman said: “For a period there it looked like they were going down a slippery slope but they have turned it around.
“The U19 manager there, Brian Dorrian, says there is a good buzz about the place.
“I’ll try and get over if I can at the end of these games and see how they are going. I always try and get back for one game.”
And Coleman is keeping a close eye on fellow Donegal man Jack Keaney and Rovers goalkeeper Ed McGinty, a resident of Ballyshannon.
“Keaney scored an unbelievable free kick a few weeks ago against Shamrock Rovers, which is great and it's great to see Donegal lads going there and doing well.
“It's a great club and hopefully they keep going in the right direction.”
