Seahawks WR Gary Jennings was coached by Russell Wilson at YMCA

When rookie wide receiver Gary Jennings joins the Seattle Seahawks on the field this spring, he will be reunited with a former coach. No, it’s not a team coordinator or position coach, but rather quarterback Russell Wilson.

“He was my YMCA basketball coach when I was younger,” Jennings told reporters via conference call after he was drafted. “We went to the same school.”

Apparently, when Wilson was in high school he coached a YMCA youth basketball team that Jennings – who estimates he was in “fourth grade or less” at the time – played on.

“He was a scrapper,” Jennings cracked. “I was young at the time. He was a great basketball coach.”

Jennings also recalled playing youth basketball with Wilson’s younger sister Anna, who is now a backup guard on the Stanford women’s basketball team.

Jennings called his selection by the Seahawks “a perfect fit,” and is excited to start working with Wilson – as a peer this time.

You can listen to Jenning’s entire conference call below.
