Seahawks wide receivers looking sharp in training camp

After two days of training camp, the Seattle Seahawks have plenty to be excited about, but the depth of their wide receiver group, in particular, has attracted a fair amount of the spotlight.

“I’m always going to start with Tyler (Lockett),” offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said after Friday’s practice. “If there’s a smarter, more instinctive football player then I don’t know who it is at that position… He’s just a special talent, certainly ready to take over that number one role.”

Behind Lockett, David Moore and Jaron Brown are both displaying fantastic consistency, with Moore making two phenomenal sideline catches on Friday and Brown pulling in a deep touchdown pass from quarterback Russell Wilson. Schottenheimer described Moore’s level of athleticism and power as “hard to find”, while Brown, who “does everything right,” attracted more targets than any other receiver on day two.

Lauded rookie receiver DK Metcalf has done nothing but increase expectations, as Wilson raved about his skill after Friday’s practice. “He has the talent to be a Hall of Fame-type player,” he said. “But he hasn’t played Game 1 yet. He’s got to prove it every day… you prove it today, you prove it tomorrow, you prove it the next day and you let ‘em add up.

“He makes it easy because he wants to put the work in.”

Schottenheimer also expressed high praise for Metcalf. “We love what we see, tremendous worker, the speed and the power off the line of scrimmage is really impressive,” he said.

Malik Turner, Gary Jennings, and John Ursua are also showing dedication on and off the field, as is undrafted rookie Terry Wright, who caught a pair of nice passes from Wilson on Friday. “They’re all showing up,” said Schottenheimer. “You can see (Turner) and Russ (Wilson) picked right up where they left off… Jennings is growing as a player, he’s understanding his roles… he had a hot adjustment today off one of our empty protections that you don’t see a young player make.”

Wilson, for one, agrees: “I really believe, with the guys we have, that we can do something special.”
