Seahawks tried hard to medically clear Malik McDowell before release

The Seattle Seahawks’ 2017 second round draft pick, Malik McDowell, was released earlier this offseason after never playing a down of football for the Seahawks.

While it was a disappointing end to his tenure in the Emerald City, it does sound like the Seahawks did all they could to avoid this ending. According to Drew Rosenhaus, McDowell’s agent, Seattle’s team doctors did everything they could to clear McDowell, but they ultimately never felt comfortable giving him a designation indicating that he could play again.

However, Rosenhaus went on to say that McDowell has in fact been cleared by independent doctors, going on to say that, “we’re confident he’s going to be back and playing this year.”

McDowell’s saga is an interesting one. After Seattle selected him early in the second round in 2017, he suffered extensive injuries in an ATV accident that ultimately cost him all of the last two NFL seasons. He was released a few months ago, and recently had a workout with the Dallas Cowboys.

Seattle is still feeling the affects of McDowell’s disappointing tenure, and is still on the hunt for more help on the defensive line – a position they are expected to address in this year’s NFL Draft.
