Seahawks’ trade for defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is official

The Seattle Seahawks’ trade for defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is now in the books. According to the official NFL transaction report, the deal with the Houston Texans was completed Sunday afternoon.

In exchange for the three-time Pro Bowler, the Seahawks sent the Texans linebacker Jacob Martin, pass rusher Barkevious Mingo and a third-round selection in the 2020 NFL draft.

Houston has agreed to pay Clowney’s $7 million signing bonus, leaving Seattle with roughly $8 million owed to their new defensive end, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported earlier.

Schefter also noted the Seahawks had “promised” not to slap Clowney with the franchise tag at the end of the season.

With Clowney on the roster and Martin and Mingo with the Texans, the Seahawks now have one open spot on the 53-man squad, which is likely to be filled by backup quarterback Geno Smith.

ESPN’s Josina Anderson tweeted Sunday Smith intends to re-sign with Seattle and can now do so.

The Seahawks have a bonus practice scheduled for Monday at 2:30 p.m. PT.
