Seahawks trade back into 7th round, select wide receiver John Ursua

Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider got a bit impatient watching the seventh round of the 2019 NFL draft go by without a pick – so he decided to do something about it.

Seattle traded back into the draft, giving up a 2020 sixth-rounder in order to acquire pick No. 236 near the end of the seventh round.

The Seahawks then used the pick to select Hawaii receiver John Ursua.

Ursua, Seattle’s 11th pick of the draft, gives the Seahawks a player who had a monstrous season with Hawaii last year, leading the FBS with 16 touchdown receptions.

While his production was outstanding, Ursua is very undersized – coming in at five-foot-nine and 178 pounds. He’s also 25 years old, after serving a two-year mission before starting his collegiate career at Hawaii.

Ursua now becomes Seattle’s third receiver in the 2019 draft class, joining D.K. Metcalf and Gary Jennings.

Doug Baldwin’s future is very much in doubt, and Seattle’s decision to go after a third receiver could indicate the Seahawks believe his NFL career is over.
