Seahawks to sign former 49ers defensive end Kerry Hyder

The Seattle Seahawks have a new pass-rushing threat in town.

Hyder, who played in all 16 games with 14 starts in 2020, posted a career-best 8.5 sacks and became arguably the Niners’ top threat off the edge after Nick Bosa’s season-ending injury. He also compiled a total of 49 tackles, 18 QB hits, and a fumble recovery during his year-long stint with the team.

With Carlos Dunlap not re-signed as of Tuesday, Hyder helps to fill a key need for Seattle’s defense. The 30-year old defensive end went undrafted out of Texas Tech in 2014, spending that season on the New York Jets practice squad, before spending the 2015-18 seasons as a member of the Detroit Lions. Hyder played as a backup for the Dallas Cowboys in 2019, signing with the 49ers in Mar. 2020 on a one-year contract.

The Seahawks did not act very aggressively during the first few days of free agency, but with the Hyder pickup and the re-signing of defensive end Benson Mayowa, they appear to be picking up steam.
