Seahawks still searching for ways to complement defensive linemen

The Seattle Seahawks had high hopes for defensive end Ziggy Ansah when they signed him to the squad this offseason despite the fact he was still recovering from shoulder surgery.

After sitting out the first two games of the season, Ansah made his Seahawks debut Week 3 against the Saints. He logged his lone sack on the year the following week in Arizona. To date, Ansah has posted just eight tackles, the one sack and a forced fumble recovery through his four games played.

“He hasn’t gotten free like we would hope,” coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday. “He’s still working at it, getting his timing down. I can’t imagine him not continuing to improve and find it. His outside rush, he has not been able to get quite like he needs to make clean sacks. His numbers have been really, pretty solid. They’ve been effective on that stuff. He’s just mixing his game trying to figure it out.”

Ansah isn’t the only new defensive lineman on Seattle’s roster with something to prove. The Seahawks also traded with the Texans for pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney shortly before the start of the season.

“Again, we need to complement these guys,” Carroll continued. “It’s not all about one guy. We need to complement these guys better with guys that are rushing inside to help them with their spacing and all of that.”

Ansah and Clowney will get another shot at the quarterback this Sunday when Lamar Jackson and Ravens come to town. They will be joined by Jarran Reed, who is set to see his first game back following his suspension.
