A special teams unit can give just as much as it can take away, and for the Seattle Seahawks lately, the balance might be just a little off.
During the Seahawks’ victory over the Browns Week 6, Seattle blocked a punt, but also missed kicks and allowed for long returns, shifting the momentum of the game.
“I’m only concerned that we’ve given up a couple big plays and we made a couple big plays,” coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday. “I like us to be more consistent with what’s going on. We’ve got to avoid getting blocked a couple times.”
But Carroll isn’t just blaming his own team for the mishaps, referring to some officiating that likely could have changed the outcome of a couple of plays.
“Like I told you, there are calls in the game that could’ve gone the other way,” Carroll explained. “The whole thing would’ve been entirely different, and nobody would’ve even brought up the topic. I love our punt block last week. The execution was perfect. Disappointed in the kick, the punt coming out backed up. There’s stuff.”
Eventually, something will have to give if the inconsistency continues, but for now, Carroll does not seem worried too worried about the situation.
“My faith in our guys and Mike [Dickson] kicking the football and J [Jason] Myers kicking the ball, I don’t worry about any of that stuff,” Carroll continued. “We’re moving on.”
Three of Seattle’s five wins have come by a field goal or less, and all but one of its six games have been decided by six points or less.
The Seahawks special teams will have to step up against the Ravens Week 7.
