Seahawks sign long snapper Tyler Ott to contract extension

The Seattle Seahawks prioritized shoring up their special teams this offseason, and they took yet another step toward getting that done on Tuesday when they signed long snapper Tyler Ott to a multi-year contract extension.

Ott, 27, came to the Seahawks in 2017 and has served as the team’s long snapper for the past two seasons. He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Patriots after an accomplished career at Harvard, but ended up bouncing around to the Rams, Giants and Bengals before settling down in Seattle.

He is the only long snapper in camp this season, after having to beat out undrafted free agent Tanner Carew last year.

With Ott’s extension, the Seahawks now have all three of their specialists – Ott, kicker Jason Myers and punter Michael Dickson – under contract for multiple seasons.

Special teams coordinator Brian Schneider is certainly happy to see the team settle on one player at each spot, especially after having six specialists in camp last year.

“Yeah, last year at this time we had six specialists,” Schneider said on Tuesday. “We had two snappers, we had two kickers, two punters, and so it was just a lot of juggling to get them all the work, equal amount. It’s nice when they are set, and they can just focus on all three of them getting better.”

Official terms on Ott’s contract were not disclosed, but the long snapper will be in the fold at least through next season.
