Seahawks shock Chiefs with last-second victory in preseason opener

KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ A game that lacked for everything for most of the first 59 minutes turned memorable on the final play.

Seattle's Trevon Boykin hit Tanner McEvoy on a 37-yard touchdown as time expired and after a Kansas City penalty, Troymaine Pope then ran in the two-point conversion to lift the Seahawks to an unlikely 17-16 exhibition win Saturday.

The TD capped an 88-yard drive in 1:07 after the Seahawks were able to stop Kansas City on a third-and-5 run.

Boykin hit Montario Hunter and McEvoy for passes to get Seattle into Chiefs territory.

The ball snapped with 4 seconds left on the final play and Boykin rolled around before throwing it to the 6-foot-6 McEvoy who used his body to shield the defender and make the catch in the end zone.

Before that, the game looked as forgettable as an exhibition game could be.

Russell Wilson threw an interception to end his only series of the game.

The Seahawks trailed 13-3 at the end of a first half as desultory for Seattle as the score indicates.

A penalty on the kickoff return helped set up the Chiefs at the Seattle 49 to start the game and the home team drove easily against the Seahawks' number one defense for a quick touchdown.

The key play was a 20-yard pass on third-and-9 when a four-man Seattle rush didn't mount much pressure on quarterback Alex Smith, who scrambled around until finding Jeremy Maclin open down field.

Wilson played one series and following the KC touchdown, led Seattle to the 14 where on first down, his pass in the end zone intended for Jermaine Kearse was instead picked off by former UW Husky standout Marcus Peters.

Wilson was 3 for 6 for 34 yards.

Seattle's much-scrutinized starting offensive line played three series and largely acquitted itself well with the caveat that the Chiefs did not suit up five defensive starters, including standout pass rushers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston.

Rookie Trevone Boykin, attempting to win the backup QB job, played the rest of the first half. After a ragged beginning he hit on four straight passes while in the hurry-up offense late in the first half. But the drive stalled when George Farmer _ who until a week ago was playing cornerback _ was stuffed on two straight attempts to pick up 1 yard.

Christine Michael, Seattle's No. 1 tailback with Thomas Rawls still sidelined, was the offensive star of the first half for the Seahawks with 44 yards on seven carries.

Michael had three carries for 17 yards to key a 10-play, 20-yard march that ended in a 52-yard Steven Hauschka field goal early in the second quarter for the Seahawks' only points of the first half.

The Seahawks played without defensive starters Kam Chancellor (groin) and Michael Bennett, the latter apparently just getting the day off.

Fitting the excitement of the game, the two teams exchanged field goals in the third quarter _ Hauschka hitting from 49 yards and then Kansas City's Cairo Santos from 58 _ to make it 16-6 heading into the final 15 minutes.

The Seahawks got a chance.

Powell picked off a pass from former Stanford star Kevin Hogan that was thrown behind and then tipped by receiver Da'Ron Brown into Powell's hands, returning it to midfield.

The Seahawks put Boykin back in the game at that point. But he was sacked on the first two plays and the drive stalled.

A 15-yard Boykin scramble on third down a series later helped set up a 50-yard field goal by Hauschka that made it 16-9 with 3:15 remaining.

The Seahawks got the ball back at their own 12 with 1:07 left and Boykin immediately hit three passes to get Seattle into Kansas City territory and set up the frantic ending.
