Seahawks rookie DK Metcalf in ‘good spot’ for Seattle’s opener

Seahawks rookie wide receiver DK Metcalf missed the majority of training camp recovering from minor knee surgery. With just one reception for eight yards on the preseason books, he’s just days away from his regular-season debut in Seattle’s home opener.

Metcalf was limited in practice to start the week but returned to full participation on Thursday.

“It’s been good to see him work the past couple days because he really hasn’t worked for the last two weeks or whatever,” offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said after practice. “I think he’s in a good spot. Again, all those guys I feel very comfortable with where they are mentally, but you still have the transition into the NFL, a real game.”

Schottenheimer said one of the keys to getting Metcalf ready is facing off against Seattle’s formidable defense in practice – the closest thing to simulating an actual matchup. Metcalf has been tested by the veterans, which is to be expected.

“We actually had a good-on-good period today and we were going against the defense and Russ kind of threw a little skinny post to DK and it got on him really fast and he just, he turned his head around and it hit him in the hand and kind of fell to the ground,” Schottenheimer explained. “He wasn’t quite ready for it.”

Having missed so many reps over the summer, Schottenheimer is hoping Metcalf can make the most of the few practice days left. The Seahawks are set to square off against the Bengals at 1:05 p.m. PT on Sunday.

“I was really a cool rep for him. He made a really great play later on in practice, a similar type timing thing. We think they’ll play very well. Will there be growing pains? For sure.

“I think he’s in a good spot and we’ll see how it plays.”
