Seahawks re-sign backup QB Geno Smith, add 6 players to practice squad

The Seattle Seahawks have confirmed the re-signing of backup quarterback Geno Smith. Smith was released Saturday during the initial 53-man cuts.

With the completion of the trade for defensive end Jadeveon Clowney from the Texans on Sunday, Smith’s place became available on the active roster. Clowney and Smith now occupy the spots vacated by Jacob Martin and Barkevious Mingo – both sent to Houston as a part of the deal.

Smith had battled all summer alongside Paxton Lynch to back up Russell Wilson in the regular season. Lynch, who was waived from Seattle’s roster on Saturday, passed through unclaimed and is now a free agent.

In addition to the Smith news, Seattle also announced the addition of six players to its practice squad:

Wide receiver Jazz Ferguson

Wide receiver Terry Wright

Tight end Jacob Hollister

Cornerback Simeon Thomas

Guard Jordan Roos

Tackle Elijah Nkansah

Teams around the league can have up to 10 players on the squad, leaving Seattle room for four more signings.
