Seahawks QB Russell Wilson to attend Yankees spring training

The Seattle Seahawks will once again rent out star quarterback Russell Wilson, who will report to the New York Yankees spring training camp on Friday and Saturday, according to Yankees beat reporter Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media.

Wilson reported to Yankees camp last season, taking ground balls at second base and interacting with fans. He even got an at-bat, although he struck out before getting to show off his skill on the base paths.

Wilson was a two-sport athlete at North Carolina State. He played second base and was taken in the fourth round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies (he was also a 41st-round pick of the Baltimore Orioles coming out of high school in 2007). He played in parts of two minor league seasons with the Rockies, appearing in 93 games and hitting .229 with five home runs and 19 stolen bases before deciding to commit full time to football.

Wilson’s rights were eventually traded to the Texas Rangers and then to the Yankees, for whom he has made a handful of appearances at spring training, mostly as a motivational speaker and celebrity.

Two-sport quarterbacks have been all the rage in the last year or so, with Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes getting a lot of attention for his baseball background and Kyler Murray forgoing the Oakland Athletics to instead pursue a career in the NFL.

The choice worked out quite well for Wilson and Mahomes and should work out well for Murray too.
