Seahawks pass up on Ejiro Evero, hire Mike Macdonald as new HC

The Carolina Panthers may be one step closer to retaining defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.

As first reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport this afternoon, the Seattle Seahawks are set to hire Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald as their new head coach. Evero had interviewed for the position twice with the Seahawks, one of two remaining teams with a head-coaching vacancy entering Wednesday.

All who’s left is the Washington Commanders, who may have been left at the altar by Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson on Tuesday. Evero has not interviewed with the Commanders to this point.

Barring an unforeseen, last-minute meet-up with Washington, Evero does not have any more head-coaching jobs available to him. That could, of course, mean he’ll be sticking around in Charlotte for 2024—as he’s still under contract.

Evero, however, might be drawing some outside interest for another defensive coordinator opportunity.

While the Panthers reportedly hope to retain the 43-year-old, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer recently opined that the Green Bay Packers, the Los Angeles Rams and/or the Miami Dolphins may attempt to poach Evero. Carolina had previously blocked interview requests for their defensive play-caller from the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New York Giants.
