Seahawks OC carefully eyeing backup quarterback competition

The Seattle Seahawks have two veterans this season competing for the coveted job of backing up starting quarterback Russell Wilson.

Paxton Lynch and Geno Smith, both signed to the roster this offseason, have their work cut out for them this training camp. Neck and neck through the earlier workouts, Seattle hopes one will emerge as the clear choice moving forward.

“Fun competition, both guys have made plays,” offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said after Friday’s practice. “Paxton was really good today. Geno hit a nice go ball down the boundary, it’s been fun.”

Smith could be taking the early lead, however, for his play off of the football field.

Schottenheimer explained: “We’re pushing them hard, it’s been fun, we do a little competition in the quarterback room, where we have them kind of draw up the plays, it was fun today to watch them compete. Geno won a couple of them which made Russ a little bit pissed off, which was good, it’s always good when you make him angry.”

All joking aside, the backup quarterback battle will be one to watch throughout the during of training camp. Both quarterbacks will undoubtedly get their shots to impress during the exhibition matchups.

“But they’re really competing, they understand it’s going to be a tough competition, that goes a long way,” Schottenheimer continued. “Ultimately, it’s going to come down to who can move the team and who can score points for us in the preseason.”
