Seahawks have made contact with Russell Wilson’s agent

The Seattle Seahawks have historically tried to sign their high-profile players to contract extensions a year before they are set to hit free agency. If that is the case with star quarterback Russell Wilson, then the clock is already ticking.

Wilson is set to become a free agent after the 2019 season and is expected to receive one of the biggest contracts in NFL history.

While getting a deal done a year early would be a nice way to cross a very important item off his checklist, it doesn’t sound like general manager John Schneider is in too big of a hurry.

“We’ve been in communication with his agent Mark (Rodgers), and I’m sure we’ll continue to talk,” Schneider said. “There are some guys who are unrestricted free agents right now, so we try to work through that process, the different phases of it. There’s several guys that have one year left on their contract in terms of extension. Obviously he’s incredibly important.”

Schneider is no doubt prioritizing Seattle’s 14 unrestricted free agents, which include Frank Clark, K.J. Wright and Justin Coleman.

Even though contract negotiations aren’t happening right away with Wilson and his camp, Schneider isn’t concerned about Wilson’s future in the Emerald City.

Asked whether he thinks Wilson wants to be in Seattle long-term, Schneider said: “I do. I don’t have any other reason to believe that, other than website rumors and stuff like that.”
