Seahawks drop to No. 25 in Touchdown Wire’s Week 17 NFL power rankings

The Seattle Seahawks are having an uncharacteristic bad season. At a certain point you are what you record says you are, though. Right now that means Seattle has lost (10) twice as many games as they’ve won (five) and have clinched last place in their division for the first time in 25 years.

That seems to be the number of the week, as the Seahawks have been ranked No. 25 in Touchdown Wire’s latest batch of NFL power rankings.

“Change is on the horizon for the Seahawks. QB Russell Wilson provides some spark and even RB Rashaad Penny is turning it around as he had 135 rushing yards. That Seattle defense is downright bad losing late to a third-string QB. The Bears took a 25-24 win.”

While the 25th spot seems appropriate, we don’t want to pin too much blame on the defense, which has played nearly four more games’ worth of snaps than Seattle’s offense. It’s also worth mentioning that a normally-solid special teams unit was abysmal and the offense is more dysfunctional than at any previous point in the Russell Wilson era.

At least part of that imbalance has to be placed on the shoulders of Wilson, who has made walking himself into sacks something of a fine art. He’s also been ignoring the most athletic playmaker on the team for too long – D.K. Metcalf’s 41-yard touchdown catch accounted for his only production all game against the Chicago Bears and his first score in seven games. Shoddy pass protection and confusing playcalling have also played a role.

When there are this many problems going on, the fault ultimately lies at the feet of the head coach. If the Seahawks make one major change this offseason, it should be firing Pete Carroll and finding a younger, more in-tuned to the modern NFL game alternative.
